The Michael Magro Foundation Raises Over $100,000 For Pediatric Specialty Programs

The Michael Magro Foundation is pleased to announce that their 12th annual Evening of Tasting & Giving, a fundraiser showcasing Long Island’s best restaurants, bakeries, and wineries, was a record-breaking success.

Thanks to the 600+ guests who attended the event Monday evening, October 17th, 2016 at the Carltun Eisenhower Park, over $120,000 was raised. All monies benefit The Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop-University Hospital, the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Program at Stonybrook Hospital, and other pediatric specialty programs. $20,000 goes directly to funding the School re-entry and Ongoing Academic Resources (SOAR) program at The Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop-University Hospital.

Lauren Jelencovich, a singer known for her portrayals of opera and musical theatre roles, currently on a world tour with Yanni as his featured vocalist, performed at the event, accompanied by Louis Pannullo. The 2016 Honoree was Priority Payment Systems.

Michael Magro was a thirteen-year-old seventh grade student at Hicksville Middle School in Hicksville, New York, when he was diagnosed with leukemia (A.L.L.). During his illness, his remarkable courage and strength were an inspiration to everyone who knew him. He passed away within months of that diagnosis.

The Michael Magro Foundation, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, was established in January 2005 by Michael’s parents, Terrie and Paul Magro, and his brother Marc (a pediatric cancer survivor) to honor Michael’s life. The efforts of the Foundation started with the pediatric cancer patients and their families at The Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop-University Hospital as well as to other Winthrop pediatric specialties where the treatment of chronic diseases is ongoing because that is where Michael was treated for his leukemia.
