Holiday Cheer Delivered by Amazing High School Students & Friends

Our week long adventure started on Sunday December 14th. with 14 Hicksville varsity lacrosse boys and their coach in the lobby of Winthrop University Hospital. Each year the team reaches out to me and asks if they can deliver toys to the pediatric unit and spend some time talking to the patients. This unique experience makes everyone smile and feel good as they deliver the toys and gift cards they collected. This year Peak Performance Physical Therapy joined the varsity lacrosse players and donated toys for children from birth to 18 years old.

The very next day, Barry Tech Culinary students along with Chef Paul Magro visited the Pediatric Unit with trays and trays of cookies they baked for the staff and patients. A variety ranging from chocolate chip to lemon poppy and many more in between totaled over 1200 cookies. The Cookies for Kids Program was started by the culinary department about 6 years ago by Chef Magro. In addition to delivering the goodies to pediatrics, the cookies are also shared with Pediatric ICU, Pediatric ED, Cancer Center for Kids and the Pediatric Specialty practices all on the campus of WUH.

To continue our week of giving, Thursday Sienna Wealth Advisory Group, Joe DeSena and Katie Coleman and staff delivered sacks full of toys for the hospitals holiday party. The toys were collected by their clients at a holiday party two weeks before.

The Hicksville School District every year runs a toy drive at the Middle School and Woodland Elementary School for the foundation. The toys these children collected were brought to Winthrop’s Hempstead Pediatric Clinic, Pediatric Associates and Stonybrook Pediatric oncology program.

Last but not least Local 3 Retirees collects toys every year for MMF in memory of Joe Terino and brings the toys direct to The Cancer Center for Kids. Mary Terino who organizes the drive every year also presents the foundation with a check from the Retirees.
